Vermillion

We had a short trip today but there was no wind. We tried to sail some but when we got nowhere we gave up. At one point we had a scare where we were going to go between two buoys that we thought were for fishing nets. We made an evasive maneuver to stay outside them but ended up between two others. We didn't notice the buoys get tugged so we thought all was OK. Then we noticed that the autopilot was drifting to one side. It worked fine manual steering but thought maybe something was caught below. Greg went into the water to check and saw nothing. Then we power cycled the autopilot and all was well. It was pretty much a motor trip on smooth water. At one point we got inundated with small bugs, like fleas, that covered everything. They didn't bite but were everywhere and were slow. So if you sat down, you squashed them all, just like in a previous post. They stayed with us until the end. It was awful. I think I'd prefer rain to avoid these bugs. For the last hour the wind picked up a little and we power sailed.

View down the dock to the Put-In-Bay Yacht Club just before we left. One of the closer trips to the bathroom from the boat.

Put-In-Bay from the back as we are leaving the island.

The bugs that covered everything as we sailed/motored from Put-In-Bay to Vermillion. There were that many bugs pretty much everywhere including on us. Trying to swipe them away just squashed them leaving a mess on your hand and whatever they were sitting on. What a mess.

Approach to Vermillion.

View down the canal as we approached the marina. There were houses with nice boats on both sides and cul-de-sac canals with more houses.

We docked on the right just before the townhouses.

View from the top of a hill by the marina of our boat and the cul-de-sac canal across the way from our boat.

Sunset at the park across the street from the marina.

Another sunset view from the park.

The lighthouse and flag.

Sunset view of the entry canal back out to Lake Erie.

The locals at the marina suggested Rudy's for dinner. Since we had been to this town last year on our trip in the other direction, we had been to Rudy's and on the way to Rudy's saw the place where we had dinner last year, Old Prague Restaurant. We had an appetizer and I had a Great Lakes Brewery Dortmunder Pils, which I've had before in a can. It is a solid European pils for an American version. I also had a Mango Rajah by The Brew Kettle. It was an OK IPA, not very bitter but a little malty. We then went to the Old Prague Restaurant to eat. We had eaten here last year and the food is great. The server Czech beers that I can't spell. They are lagers, pilsners and dark lagers. They are very good, better than the Dortmunder. We had a pierogi stuffed with sauerkraut appetizer the was good. I had the pork halusky and spaetzle that was to die for awesome. The spaetzle were almost as good as my mom's and wife's and the halusky was fabulous. I really wish I could get the spices used to make the cabbage.

The marina is a nice little municipal marina that is between a little park and beach, and a community of houses on what appear to be man made canals. Next to the marina is a row of townhouses that have docks on the canal. The bathroom has a shower. I didn't see laundry and the WIFI is open.
