Cleveland

Sunset at Geneva on the Lake marina.

We had a very good day sailing from Geneva on the Lake to Cleveland. We started with no wind but that changed quickly. At first we had a nice breeze coming over the stern pushing us along. We had full sails up. The winds picked up to the way they were previously when we struggled tacking into the wind with high waves and strong winds. The difference was today the wind was coming from behind us and the waves were pushing us along. This time the bull ride was more like body surfing. The 4 foot waves would come up behind the boat and the back would rise and the boat would slide down the slope until the wave passed. It was a bit rocky when they didn't come straight on. There was quite a bit of rocking side-to-side. We had the foresight to keep the reef in the mainsail so when the wind picked up it was no problem to reduce the size of the sail. We went faster with the reduced mainsail and no foresail than with both fully deployed in the morning. This day turned out to be the one in which we covered the most distance using just sail power.

The video doesn't do justice to how rough the water was. Also it seems that any time you want to video something it goes away. These were waves about 3 nautical miles off shore.

Our marina was right behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but we got to Cleveland too late to visit as they closed in an hour from when we arrived. We were also behind the Museum of the Great Lakes and Cleveland Browns Stadium.

We had dinner in Cleveland at a brewpub on the river. This provided entertainment as two large freighters came down the channel and needed tugboats to navigate the curve in the river. It seemed to take forever for the ship to go by; they move so slowly.

Passing in front of our table (need a panorama to get the whole ship in the picture)

Departing with a tugboat pushing the back around to make the turn.

The brewpub was called Collision Bend. Not all ships going through must be this successful.

We departed Cleveland for Vermillion OH. The journey was the same as going to Cleveland, pretty strong tail winds and high waves. The worst of the conditions did happen later this day so it most of the day was a much more pleasurable sail.

The goal for tomorrow is Cedar Point, woohoo.
