Geneva On The Lake

 

After going back and forth about staying in Cleveland a second night, and likely a third due to weather, we changed our minds and headed out. It looked like the winds would be good today, so we didn't want to waste it. That prediction turned out to be typical of most weather predictions, it was wrong. There was no wind all day. We sailed for a very little time first thing and that miniscule wind died. We are expecting to be in Geneva On The Lake and extra day due to weather. We encountered a lot of buoys marking fishing nets that we had to avoid. This is the most we've seen in one area. It was very hazy, hot and humid today. This is really the first day that it's been this bad all day.

View east down the beach from about the same place as the previous picture. It was so hazy all day you could hardly tell the lake horizon from the sky. Not a great picture taking day from the water.

We ate a Murphy's Pub and Ale House. I had bangers and mash that I would recommend. I broke from my tradition and had a hard cider from Ireland. It was very good. On the way back we stopped at Sportsterz to have a beer and listen to the band, Higher Power, that was playing on an outdoor stage. I had a Great Lakes Brewing made by Vibacious Double IPA. It was very malty and strong. The band was pretty good. They played a good set list.

We stayed at this marina last year. We had to dock on the wall rather than in a slip which put us far from the amenities. There was a bath with shower not too far, but the main facility was quite a hike. They do have laundry at the main facility.

Frankfort day 2

After checking the weather for the next day, we saw that the winds were going to be very high. We were pretty sure that we would not be able to sail the next day. As it turns out the forecast was correct. The wind and waves were very high. There was a small craft advisory all day. I'm not sure whether our boat is a small craft, but there was no advisory the first two days and there was some miserable sailing and motoring in the afternoons. When we went to the beach to check out the waves and get pictures, the wind blew the sand so hard that it hurt and embedded in your skin. The sand was blowing across the parking lot like snow snakes on the road in winter. It was a good call not to leave, but it puts us a day behind. You don't get to see all the waves, but you can see the splash on the break wall compared to the lighthouse. The flags at the VFW were all straight out. Whitehall and Muskegon

Our marina in Whitehall was at the end of White Lake, about 6 miles from Lake Michigan. so we had a long cruise even though, for all intents and purposes we were there. Despite the long trip, we got there in plenty of time. The marina seemed to favor sailboats as most of the slips had sailboats in them, in contrast to Ludington, where the marina was half empty by 6 AM as all the fisherman had left. The decommissioned lighthouse, now museum, at White Lake  We had a short trip to our final destination, Muskegon, so despite unfavorable wind conditions again, we sailed about one third the distance before motoring. The winds had good speed but again were headwinds, and the waves were quite high, with occasional whitecaps. We saw several other sailboats going north, with the wind. I hope those were one way trips or they'd be motoring back. Algonac

Due to the prediction of lightning for today, we reserved our slip for 2 nights. We planned to do a much needed oil change, refuel, do laundry and get groceries. We did accomplish those but at the expense of missing out on what turned out to be a day with favorable winds and no lightning. We also got to sleep in real beds at my cousin's house and do laundry. We are three days behind our original schedule but that did not include any planned down days.
