Pentwater

We left Muskegon in a light rain. Looking out over Lake Michigan as we were in the channel from Muskegon Lake we saw better conditions. It turned out to be the case. The rain ended as we got away from shore and looking back saw the rain.

Exiting the channel to Muskegon Lake

The sail was pretty good today. We had 10-15 knot winds out of the south as we headed north, which is good, but there were pretty big waves, about 3 feet. The waves made the boat rock a lot so we had to keep an eye on the auto-pilot. That meant that we couldn't just let the auto-pilot take care of everything. So as good days go, it was good from a progress perspective but we had to be very alert all day (no playing games). We covered 49 miles, which was a very aggressive plan.

The worst thing was that when winds died for a time and the sun was out, we got inundated with biting flies. They stayed with us until we were in port. We had to be careful to keep the screen on the door to make sure cabin didn't fill with flies.

The picture doesn't do it justice, but there were millions of flies attacking us. The floor was littered with the ones we swatted. By far the worst part of the day. It kept one of us busy while the other monitored sailing instruments.

The dunes as we approached Pentwater.

The view coming in to Pentwater. We docked towards the right of the picture.

Multiple readers have commented that I haven't reviewed the beer that I've had and my response was that this was a sailing blog. I am going to try to comment on eateries and drinks on this trip.

We ate at The Brown Bear tavern. It was a burger place end the burgers were good. We had Alaskan Pale Ale which was a good malty pale ale, the Perrin Black Ale that is porterish but not totally a porter and Brown Bear Ale by Mountain Town Brewing that is advertised as a summer ale that was good for the style. Three good choices depending on what you're looking for.
