Charlevoix

There was a nice breeze and calm waters as we left and for the morning. We made good speed but not fast. There was another boat that left shortly after we did. Two boats going in the same direction is an unspoken race. We got well ahead of them but somehow they caught up by noon. At noon wind died at a point that we were near shore. We were stopped in bright hot sun and got attacked by flies again. We had lunch and then started the motor, not to make progress as we had plenty of time, rather to try to lose the flies. About 15 minutes after lunch the wind picked up to higher than the morning's breeze. The other boat got ahead of us and we wondered how as there was no wind. With relatively smooth water we flew achieving nearly the theoretical hull speed for short bursts. The wind was over the beam (60-120 degrees, over the side of the boat) so we had optimal wind speed and direction, and smooth water. We passed the other boat and got quite a way ahead of them. We surmised that the boat was not as good in higher wind. As we approached the channel into Charlevoix, the wind speed and with it the waves shot up well above what was comfortable for our boat. We were glad to be entering port and not having to sail in the extreme conditions.

Approaching the channel we passed behind this ship.

Entering the channel.

The municipal marina is the left half. Our boat is closest to the wall.

Some of the homes/rentals around Round Lake that is between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix.

The municipal marina is another one that is like a country club. It has an excellent restroom and shower facility, kitchen area and laundry. It also had a splash park. It was right in downtown, so restaurants/bars are readily available by foot.

We ate at the Bridge Street Tap Room which was good. It had a decent beer selection but I was disappointed by their not having any Lake Michigan fish. After that we went to The Villager Pub for a couple beers. They had a better selection of beer and a couple of whitefish options. Would have been a better place to go first as I would have gotten the fish that I always look for in fish producing places.
