Buffalo NY

After spending the night at Port Colborne at the south end of the Welland Canal, we headed to Buffalo to drop off Greg's brothers. It will be just the two of us from now on.  You are required to have at least 3 people on the boat in the Welland Canal. Here is the Buffalo skyline from Lake Erie.

 Sunset at Geneva on the Lake marina. We had a very good day sailing from Geneva on the Lake to Cleveland. We started with no wind but that changed quickly. At first we had a nice breeze coming over the stern pushing us along. We had full sails up. The winds picked up to the way they were previously when we struggled tacking into the wind with high waves and strong winds. The difference was today the wind was coming from behind us and the waves were pushing us along. This time the bull ride was more like body surfing. The 4 foot waves would come up behind the boat and the back would rise and the boat would slide down the slope until the wave passed. It was a bit rocky when they didn't come straight on. There was quite a bit of rocking side-to-side. We had the foresight to keep the reef in the mainsail so when the wind picked up it was no problem to reduce the size of the sail. We left Clyde pretty early because we had a pretty long way and wanted to stop for lunch along the way. We wanted to get to IYC to be picked up by our wives. We were surprised to find the boat grounded as we tried to leave. The water level must have dropped overnight. Since it's a sandy/silty bottom, we were able to push off the dock add to a lot of throttle and get dislodged. It was a warm day with plenty of nature on this part of the canal. We went through Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. We saw many herons, eagles, hawks, ducks and geese. We had two locks left, the last one on the Erie Canal, number 25 and one bringing us up to Cayuga Lake. All of the locks on this trip were down except the last one into the lake. Tonawanda

The threat of rain and thunderstorms got us going this morning. We took down the sails although it was a bit windy, it was dry. Removing the sails went quickly with three people. We started out to try to get to Tonawanda early in the hope of being demasted today. Without sails, motoring was our only option, but it would have been a decent sailing morning. Things went very bad went we missed the entrance to the Black Rock Canal that bypasses a bad part at the start of the Niagara River. We ended up going under the wrong part of the Peace Bridge. The next bridge was clearly too low for the mast and we turned to go back. But the current was so strong, we spent close to an hour going almost nowhere. Just before we were going to call for help, a US Coast Guard boat showed up and asked if we were OK. We said that we needed a tow and they obliged.
