Tobermory Canada

We decided to skip the anchorage about half way between Killarney and Tobermory and just go to Tobermory. It turned into a long day but because we left early, our arrival time was good. This makes up for the lost day earlier. We also were not sure how to anchor on a rocky bottom as opposed to sand, so skipping the anchorage eliminates that problem. The anchorage is one that is used frequently. There was a sailboat there when we sailed by but it was noontime, so we didn't want to stop.

The dock area from our dock. There are several tour boats that run out of here to the islands.

The ferry that takes cars from Tobermory to Manitoulin Island, essentially the top of Georgian Bay to the island that separates it from the North Channel.

A view of the marina facing to Georgian Bay. Our boat is center right. you can just see that back of it.

We had light winds to start the day, enough to go fast enough to reach our goal. Then about midday the winds died and we had to go to motor power. We motored the rest of the way. Winds did pick up later in the day but we weren't far from the end so we didn't bother to put up sails only to have to take them down again. The winds were pretty high so we would have needed a reef in the mainsail and the waves were pretty high as well. All in all it was a good day with pretty pleasurable sailing and motoring.

We stopped at Tobermory Brewery for happy hour and I had a flight that included all of their beers. Their beers were pretty good. The amber was the best. I didn't like the IPA much as it was a NE and pretty sweet. We ate a restaurant called Coconut Joe's. They had a smoked Lake Huron Whitefish that was excellent. They also had Three Sheets Brewery IPA that had alcohol of a session but very good flavor. Three Sheets is at the next town at which we plan to dock. Hopefully it's close to the marina and has more good beers to try.
